Greenwood FC

Greenwood FC is a County Cork soccer club competing in the Cork Athletic Union League. Established in Togher in the mid 1970's the founding members were Denis Linihan, Paddy Coen, Gerard Cronin and Pat O'Connor. It was their aim to provide a structured football forum for the many young footballers from the Togher area.

The first football teams from the club entered the under 12s section in the Cork Schoolboys League and the under 8s and under 10s in the Southside League. The first on-pitch success for Greenwood FC was the under 8s team who won the cup in their very first attempt. In the next season the club won the under 8s league and cup double. Almost amazingly the under 10s won the cup and were the runners up in the league. Yet again the under 8s won the double in the following season.

Over time the number playing club members increased as did the number of teams. Greenwood FC claims to be the first football club to allow a girl to play in competitive soccer.

Greenwood entered a team into the Cork AUL for the first time in 1983. Brian Carey, who subsequently signed for Manchester United, starred in this AUL team.
