Dalkey United AFC is a County Dublin soccer football club established in 1953 and initially the club competed in the County Wicklow District Junior League Division 2. The members borrowed £20 (€25.40) and invested €22.50 in the purchase of soccer gear and footballs. Dalkey United's debut match was a defeat to Deansgrange however amazingly Dalkey went on to qualify for the Wicklow and District Junior Cup final in their first season. In the next season the soccer club had been playing their home matches at Hyde Park with the agreement of Dun Laoghaire County Council. Dalkey United still rent this pitch but own their own dressing rooms and modern football facilities. After competing against each other for 25 years Dalkey united merged with local rivals Dalkey Celtic in 1970 in order to pool resources and provide better facilities for their players In the late 1960's the club became members of the League of Ireland "B" Division. In 1974 Dalkey club won the FAI Intermediate Cup by beating Rialto 2-1 at Tolka Park. In the 1977/78 season Dalkey United were attempting to win the Blackthorn Trophy for the third year in a row. However there was a major mix-up over an unplayed quarter final against Dundalk FC and the League awarded the victory to Dundalk. The soccer club took legal action in the High Court which found in favour of Dalkey. After winning the rescheduled match with Dundalk, they then won the semifinal. Dalkey went on to win the final against Bohemians FC. Dalkey United resigned from the league immediately afterwards and have never applied to rejoin. In the 1980's Dalkey United's most famous product Paul McGrath, who also went on to play for Manchester United and Ireland, played junior soccer with the club. Dalkey United are in the process of implementing a soccer development plan that will see major improvements in the playing facilities and club administration. |
