Shankill FC

Shankill FC (formerly Valeview Shankill Schoolboys FC) is a south Dublin soccer football club that has its origins in the Shankill Youth Club which was formed back in 1966 by Bertie Messitt. Bertie was an Olympian sports athlete who held 16 Irish national records.

The football club provides facilities for children in Shankill and the surrounding areas to play football in a safe and friendly environment. Players range from five and six year olds in the Shankill Panthers up to the under 15s and 16s in the Dublin and District Schoolboys League.

Shankill FC has over 180 registered football players and 13 teams from under 7s to under 18s. The club has three soccer pitches and the clubhouse is in Shanganagh Park, Co. Dublin. The Team clubhouse was officially opened in 2006.

Shankill FC has produced and nurtured a number of very fine footballers. Ian Morris who played for Leeds United and Scunthorpe United also captained the the Ireland under 21 soccer team. Darren Quigley, another Shankill native, played for UCD and Manchester City. He was also the goalkeeper for the Ireland B soccer team. Yet another Shankill lad played for St Patrick's Athletic in the Eircom League of Ireland.

In 2010 the club decided to adopt the new club name of Shankill FC. Many footbal clubs over the years have taken the word "school" out of their official title, as it gave the impression that the club is associated with a school. For many years the club has catered for girls, and by 2010 season the number of girls in the club had grown substantially. It was not appropriate therefore to have the club referred to as a "boys" football club. Also as there was already a separate adult team in Shankill with the name of Valeview Shankill FC, this name was not an option for the club.

Shanganagh Park Pitch Directions : On the M11 take the Bray North exit, Take the left turn at the next roundabout heading for Shankill Cemetary, Take the right hand turn into Shankill Cemetary and follow the road as far as you can go, You are then into the Car Park and at the Shankill F.C. clubhouse.
