1972 European Championship Qualifiers

In Group 6 of the 1972
European Championship qualifiers the Irish team was drawn with Italy,
Austria and Sweden. This was the first qualification campaign for which
there was a Republic of Ireland
manager. Prior to that the Irish team had been chosen by a selection
committee. Mick Meagan
was the first Irish manager. Despite the change in approach Ireland's
results on the football did not improve. During a six match qualifier
programme Ireland garnered just a single point from a draw with Sweden
at Dalymount Park.
Due to the frequent unavailability of English-based
players Meagan was forced to use 34 different Irish players in just six
matches during the 1972 European Championship qualifiers. Seventeen players
featured in just a single match during the campaign.
