1976 European Championship Qualifiers
- Appearances Made and Goals Scored
In Group 6 of the 1976
European Championship qualifiers the Irish team was drawn with the
former USSR, Turkey and Switzerland. This was John
Giles' first qualification campaign as the Republic
of Ireland manager. Despite some excellent performances and impressive
results the Irish team narrowly failed to qualify for the Finals by a
single point.
Only 16 different Irish players were used
in six matches during the Euro 1976 qualifiers. Six players played in
every qualifying match and another four played in five out of six matches.
This was remarkable team stability for a qualifying campaign that lasted
twelve months.
