Euro 1996 Qualifiers - Appearances
Made and Goal Scorers
In Group 6 of the Euro
1996 qualifiers the Irish team was drawn with Portugal, Northern Ireland,
Austria, Latvia, and Liechtenstein. Jack
Charlton was the Republic
of Ireland manager for the entire qualification campaign. Ireland
finished in second place in the group six points behind Portugal. This
was enough for Ireland to qualify for a single play-off match against
the Netherlands at Anfield home of Liverpool
FC. Unfortunately the Irish lost out on qualification for the Euro
1996 finals as the Dutch went through courtesy of two Patrick Kluivert
goals. This marked the end of the Jack Charlton era as Republic of Ireland
manager.
Twenty-four different Irish players were
used in eleven matches (including the play-off match) during the Euro
1996 qualifiers.
