1958 World Cup Qualifiers - Appearances

In Group 1 of the 1958
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a small group with
England and Denmark. Ireland beat Denmark both home and away however lost
heavily in Wembley. England were 4-0 up at half time and went on to record
a 5-1 victory. The return match at Dalymount
Park was a much closer affair as Ireland held a 1-0 advantage after
three minutes until almost the last kick of the game. Bristol City's John
Atyeo secured a draw for the English in the 90th minute. If the Irish
had held on they would have gone into a one match play-off against England
at a neutral venue. However, England qualified for the 1958 World Cup
finals in Sweden.
