In Group 2 of the 1982
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a tough group with
Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Cyprus. This was the first World
Cup qualification campaign for Eoin
Hand as Republic of Ireland
manager. Ireland got off to an impressive start beating Cyprus away
and beating the Netherlands 2-1 at Lansdowne
Road (now the Aviva
Stadium). The group proved to be very tight and each of the teams
suffering defeats. Despite beating France in the their last group match
the Irish just missed out on qualification losing out to the French on
goal difference.
