In Group 8 of the 1986
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a group with Denmark,
the former Soviet Union, Switzerland, and Norway. This was the last qualification
campaign for Eoin Hand
as Republic of Ireland manager.
Despite an impressive start at Lansdowne
Road (Aviva Stadium)
with a 1-0 over the USSR the campaign was a bit of a disaster as the Irish
could only manage one more victory in the group. Ireland lost away to
Norway, the so-called whipping boys of the group, and could only manage
a 0-0 draw at home. Following a humiliating 1-4 defeat at home to a rampant
Denmark, Ireland finished fourth in the group table just a single point
ahead of bottom-placed Norway. Following the 1986 World Cup qualifiers
Eoin Hand was replaced by Jack
Charlton as Irish football manager.
