1990 World Cup Qualifiers - Appearances
Made and Goals Scored
In Group 8 of the 1990
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a group with Spain,
Hungary, Northern Ireland, and Malta. This was first World Cup qualification
campaign for Jack
Charlton as Republic
of Ireland manager and it proved to be a very successful one. Ireland
qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time ever. The beginning
of the campaign was not promising however. After the first three matches
Ireland had managed just two draws, a defeat to group favourites Spain,
and had scored no goals. In the next match at Lansdowne
Road (Aviva Stadium)
Charlton's Ireland beat Spain in the return match courtesy of an own goal
by Michel. The Irish then went on to win the remaining four group matches
scoring nine goals and conceding none in the process. Ireland qualified
for Italia 90 as runners-up in Group 8 just one point behind Spain.
