In Group 8 of the 1994
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a large group with
Spain, Denmark, Northern Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Albania. This
was the last World Cup qualification campaign for Jack
Charlton as Republic
of Ireland manager. Having qualified for the 1990 World Cup finals
in Italy expectations were high that the Republic would make it to the
USA. Things were looking promising when the Irish secured successive 0-0
draws to the two strongest opponents in the group - Denmark and Spain.
Indeed it could have been better had the Irish secured the win they deserved
in Seville. Inspired by a magnificent Roy Keane Ireland should have won
the match. In the penultimate match of the group Spain comprehensively
beat Ireland 1-3 at Lansdowne
Road (now Aviva Stadium).
Needing a draw to qualify in the last match in Belfast against Northern
Ireland with just under 15 minutes remaining it looked like qualification
for the finals was slipping away. Northern Ireland were leading 1-0 through
a Jimmy Quinn goal when Alan McLoughlin grabbed an equaliser to send Ireland
to the 1994 World Cup finals in the USA.
