1998 World Cup Qualifiers
- Appearances Made and Goals Scored
In Group 8 of the 1998
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a large group with
Romania, Lithuania, FYR Macedonia, Iceland and Liechtenstein. This was
the first qualification campaign for Mick
McCarthy as Republic
of Ireland manager. In a broadly disappointing campaign that included
0-0 draws at Lansdowne
Road (now Aviva Stadium)
with Lithuania and Iceland Ireland finished in the play-off position behind
group winners Romania.
McCarthy's Ireland team was drawn to play
Belgium in a two-legged play-off. The first leg in Dublin gave the Belgians
an away goal in 1-1 draw. In the second leg Ray
Houghton scored for Ireland to level the scores in the match and the
tie overall. Unfortunately for Ireland eleven minutes later Luc Nils scored
the winning goal for Belgium sending the continentals through to the World
Cup finals in 1998 in neighbouring France.
