2002 World Cup Qualifiers - Appearances
Made and Goals Scored
In Group 2 of the 2002
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn in a tough group with
Portugal, Holland, Estonia, Cyprus and Andorra. This was the last full
qualification campaign for Mick
McCarthy as Republic
of Ireland manager. Despite the difficulties presented by the teams
in the group Ireland finished an impressive qualification campaign in
second place behind Portugal on goal difference. Ireland began the group
matches with impressive results - two draws - away to the Netherlands
and Portugal. McCarthy's men finished the campaign defeating Holland 1-0,
when reduced to ten men, and a 4-0 win over Cyprus at Lansdowne
Road (now the Aviva
Stadium).
Finishing in second place meant an Ireland-Iran
two match play-off. Ireland qualified for the 2002
World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea by an aggregate score of
2-1. Mick MCarthy's delight at becoming only the second Irish manager
to lead the Republic to a major football finals competition dissolved
as the infamous Saipan incident
unfolded.
