2010 World Cup Qualifiers - Appearances
Made and Goals Scored
In Group 8 of the 2010
World Cup qualifiers the Irish team was drawn with Italy, Bulgaria,
Cyprus, Montenegro and Georgia. This was the first qualification campaign
for Giovanni
Trapattoni as Republic
of Ireland manager. Despite ending the qualification campaign without
being beaten the Irish team finished in second place and six points behind
the Italians. Six draws out of ten matches simply wasn't good enough to
win automatic qualification so Ireland had to face France in a two match
play-off. Following 0-1 defeat at home in Croke Park qualification looked
out of reach. In the return tie in Paris Robbie
Keane levelled the tie after 33 minutes and the Irish were playing
better than the French. The match went into extra time with the Irish
continuing to have the better chances to score when disaster struck. A
double hand ball by Thierry Henry went unnoticed by the match officials
and his dinked cross was nodded home from close range by William Gallas.
Despite vigorous appeals by the players at the time, and by the FAI
in the days after the match, there would be no Irish team in South Africa
for the 2010 World Cup finals.
