Before joining Manchester United he played for a number of other football clubs in Northern Ireland and Scotland. These clubs include Derry Celtic, Belfast Celtic and Hibernian. Bernard Donaghey signed for Manchester United in November 1905 while Ernest Magnall was the manager. |
Barney Donaghy & Manchester UnitedBernard Donaghy made his debut on 4 November 1905 against Lincoln City. It was a home match in the Second Division at a time when United played their home matches at Bank Street. The Reds won the match 2-1. Donaghy only played another two matches for Manchester United. A 1-0 loss away to Chesterfield on 11 November 1905. Bernard Donaghy's last match for Manchester United was on 25 April 1906 again Lincoln City once again. United won 2-3 with goals from George Wall and Jack Allan (2). Donaghy left United at the end of the 1905/06 season and he returned to Northern Ireland to play for Derry Celtic yet again. Tragically Bernard Donaghy died during WW I at the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916. |
