Mickey Hamill

Irish Footballer that Played for Manchester United - Mickey Hamill

Mickey Hamill - Introduction

Mickey Hamill was a midfielder / wing half from Belfast in Northern Ireland. Hamill played for St Paul's Swifts and Belfast Rangers before he signed for Belfast Celtic in 1909. He went on to earn seven caps for Ireland scoring just a single goal.

Mickey Hamill & Manchester United

Mickey Hamill signed for Manchester United in 1911 and made his debut on 16 September at the Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion. United, who were managed by Ernest Magnall at the time, lost the match 1-0 in front of 35,000 fans.

Mickey Hamill scored his first goal, of just two, for Manchester United on 29 April 1912 against Blackburn Rovers in a 3-1 win at Old Trafford. It was the last league goal for Manchester United in the 1911/1912 season. Hamill's only other goal for United was in January 1913 in a 4-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

Hamill never really nailed down a regular place with Manchester United and in 1914 he returned to his old club in Northern Ireland, Belfast Celtic. He also went on to play for Glasgow Celtic and Manchester City in his career in addition to playing soccer in the USA.

Mickey Hamill - Ireland Career

Mickey Hamill made his debut for Ireland on 10 February 1912 against England. It was a scoring debut for Hamill as he grabbed the only Irish goal in a 1-6 drubbing at Dalymount Park in Dublin. In total he played seven matches for Ireland scoring just the one goal. Hamill only tasted victory once in the green of Ireland beating England 3-0 in his second international match two years after his debut.

Mickey Hamill was a Catholic from West Belfast and later in his career he refused to play for Ireland until, what he believed was, discrimination against Catholic players by the IFA stopped.
