St Patrick’s Athletic FC Introduction

St Patrick’s Athletic FC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Inchicore, Dublin 8. The club was established in 1929 however it did not compete in the League of Ireland until 1951. The club play home matches at Richmond Park and is frequently referred to as the ‘Saints’ or just ‘Pats’

Following admission to the League of Ireland St Patricks Athletic won the league at the first attempt by a three point margin over Shelbourne FC. Pats won the League on a further two occasions in the following three years. A fallow period ensued until the 1989/90 season when the Saints reclaimed the title. The mid to late 1990’s saw another three League of Ireland titles come to Inchicore.

Somewhat surprisingly Patricks Athletic have only won the FAI Cup twice. The club has been runner-up in a further seven FAI Cup finals. Pat’s won the Cup for the first time in 1959 when the club beat Waterford FC 2-1 in a replay following a 2-2 draw in the first match.

St Patricks lifted the Cup two years later in 1961 when it defeated Drumcondra (Drums) 2-1 at Dalymount Park.
