Republic of Ireland Senior Football Team ResultsAssociation Football in Ireland has it’s origins in Ulster in the north of Ireland. Soccer has had a foothold in Ireland since the mid-1800’s. The first formal football organisation on the island was the Irish Football Association (IFA) and the first organisation in, what is now, the Republic of Ireland was the Leinster Football Association (LFA) established in 1892. Irish International Team Represents the Twenty-Six CountiesFollowing a period of acrimony that reflected the mainstream political situation in Ireland at the time the Football Association of the Irish Free State (FAIFS) was formed in June 1921 thereby creating a new international team. In August of 1923 FIFA accepted Ireland’s application to be allowed to compete in international soccer tournaments. The first competitive football match that the Irish Free State took part in was in the 1924 Paris Olympics. The result was a 0-1 win for the Irish team. Thus began international football for the twenty-six counties. The full list of Irish soccer international results from 1924 to 1939 are outlined below.
